How often a batter reaches base by hit, walk or hit-by-pitch per opportunity. Unlike batting average it credits walks and hit-by-pitches, and its denominator includes sacrifice flies (but not sacrifice bunts). Reaching base on an error or a fielder's choice does not count.
On-Base Percentage (OBP)

Standard statistic · MLB
Formula
OBP = (H + BB + HBP) ÷ (AB + BB + HBP + SF)
On StatVault
Profile batting tables show the published OBP from the source feed, and the MLB leaders page ranks career OBP (3,000+ at-bats). StatVault's in-house OPS+ uses a simplified (H + BB) ÷ (AB + BB) on-base rate for both player and league, because the feed carries no HBP or SF for league baselines — stated on the MLB Advanced page.
