VAL — Value Above League is StatVault's single-number seasonal player-value metric. It measures what a player added to his team's results: production in the sport's own currency (runs, points, goals) above the level the league's fringe players actually reached that season, converted to wins with rates fitted from every team-season in the encyclopedia.
Higher is better. Current method: VAL 3.0 — replacement-level impact, team-calibrated, with no team outcome (pitcher wins, saves, goalie wins) and no third-party composite as an input. Elite seasons land around 18–27; a season at replacement level is 0.
