Cross-Sport Era-Adjusted Careers

The season board asks whose single year towered furthest above everyone around them. This one asks the harder question — whose whole career did. Every value-positive season is scored against its own year-and-position peers, and those scores are summed: careerZis the total standard deviations a player accumulated above the men he actually played against, from Gordie Howe's twenty-six winters to Aaron Donald's ten.

Why this isn't a compiler's board

A season exactly at its era's median scores 0 and adds nothing; a below-median season scores negative and subtracts. So hanging around does not accumulate — only time spent above your own era does. That is why no longevity penalty is bolted on: the axis already refuses to reward padding.

  • Peak is published, never buried. Switch the board to Peak or Per Season — total, ceiling, and rate are three real answers to three different questions, and the reader picks which one is being asked.
  • Unmeasurable years are marked, not smuggled. A season whose peer bucket is too thin to rate mints no dominance, so careers reaching back into sparsely-populated leagues are measured over their rated part only. Those rows carry a partial flag and can be filtered out entirely — a truncated career is never presented as a whole one.
  • Position spread carries across sports.z is normalised inside each sport's positional peer groups, and groups with a long low-value tail (NFL front-seven and tight-end pools especially) produce sharper z, so elite careers there accumulate faster. Use the position lens to compare like with like. z is the most comparable axis that exists across sports — not a perfect one.
  • The pool is each sport's top 150 careers by career dominance; the peak and per-season lenses re-rank inside that pool.
