The season board asks whose single year towered furthest above everyone around them. This one asks the harder question — whose whole career did. Every value-positive season is scored against its own year-and-position peers, and those scores are summed: careerZis the total standard deviations a player accumulated above the men he actually played against, from Gordie Howe's twenty-six winters to Aaron Donald's ten.
Why this isn't a compiler's board
A season exactly at its era's median scores 0 and adds nothing; a below-median season scores negative and subtracts. So hanging around does not accumulate — only time spent above your own era does. That is why no longevity penalty is bolted on: the axis already refuses to reward padding.

A season at its era's median scores zero and a below-median season subtracts, so a long average career cannot climb this board — only time spent above your own era accumulates. 28 of these careers are marked partial — their earliest seasons predate a ratable peer pool, so only the measurable part is counted.
Careers that spent their working lives equally far above their own eras — near-identical accumulated dominance, different games. Not a claim they were the same player; a claim they cleared their own eras by the same total margin.
